Airservices Australia Improving Performance with Metron Harmony Air Traffic Flow Management System

Dulles, Virginia - June 25, 2012 -  Metron Aviation, a subsidiary of Airbus Americas, announced that Airservices Australia has commenced operations with Metron Harmony, the industry's leading Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) system. Metron Harmony is a comprehensive and collaborative ATFM system that allows Airservices Australia to implement traffic management initiatives to align air traffic demand with available capacity. Importantly, Metron Harmony's Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) capabilities enable the airline customers of Airservices Australia to perform flight substitutions and other schedule changes to make the best use of their allocated capacity.

Initial operating results from Airservices and feedback from their airline customers has already demonstrated a dramatic performance improvement with reductions in delays, fuel burn and emissions.  For example, airborne holding into Sydney has been reduced by approximately 33 percent, producing fuel savings of $6.5 million in the first two months of operations in Sydney alone, while average flight times have been reduced by five minutes per flight on the Melbourne-Sydney city pair, equating to over 40,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Jason Harfield, Executive General Manager, Air Traffic Control Group, Airservices Australia, said that Metron Aviation's traffic flow solution is providing significant benefits for the entire aviation community.
"Our ATFM system provides Airservices, airlines and all stakeholders with powerful capabilities to collaborate and optimize the capacity and safety of the Australian airspace, while also contributing to our environmental sustainability goals," Mr. Harfield said.
"Airservices is proven to be a world leader in harmonizing and improving the performance of air traffic management systems," said Jim Gaughan, Chief Operating Officer, Metron Aviation. "We're proud of this collaboration and the dramatic, measurable benefits that our ATFM solutions offer the world's ANSPs and their airline customers."
